A United Airlines flight from Washington Dulles to Munich had a major scare on July 25, 2025, when one of its engines failed just minutes after takeoff. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was forced to declare a “Mayday” emergency as it lost power in its left engine.
The pilots quickly acted, kept the plane flying safely at a low altitude, and started dumping fuel for over two hours to reduce weight for a safe landing. The plane returned to Dulles Airport and landed safely using instrument landing systems. Thankfully, all passengers and crew were safe.
The aircraft is now grounded while technical teams investigate what went wrong. This has raised new safety concerns about the reliability of engines on long-distance aircraft like the Dreamliner.
Just a month before the United Airlines scare, a tragic accident occurred in India. On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, also a Boeing 787-8, crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport.
The crash killed 241 people on board and 19 people on the ground, making it the first fatal crash involving a Dreamliner since its launch in 2011.
According to early investigation reports, the plane’s fuel control switches were accidentally moved to “cut-off,” which shut down both engines in the air. This led to a complete loss of power, causing the plane to crash into a residential area. Only one passenger at the rear survived with serious injuries. Authorities are still checking whether it was a mistake, technical issue, or something more serious.
In a separate development, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned about a possible safety issue in Boeing 787‑9 and 787‑10 models. The alert is about the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), a small emergency device that provides power if the main systems fail.
The FAA said some RAT units may have been built using lower-quality titanium (Grade 1 or 2 instead of the required Grade 5), which could cause problems if they ever need to be used mid-flight. Boeing has promised to check and replace these parts if needed. So far, no real-time failures of the RAT system have been reported.
Even with safety concerns in the spotlight, Boeing’s business performance is showing strong growth. In the second quarter of 2025, Boeing earned $22.7 billion — a 35% jump compared to last year. It also delivered 280 commercial jets in the first six months of the year — its highest since 2018.

Gulf Air has placed an order for 12 new Dreamliners and might order 6 more.
British Airways’ parent company (IAG) is reportedly planning to buy up to 30 Dreamliners for its global routes.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is known for being fuel-efficient and using high-tech materials. Airlines love it for long-distance travel. But these recent incidents show how important it is to keep quality, safety, and training at the highest level.
Experts say Boeing now needs to focus more on transparent communication, safety checks, and strict quality control to keep airline partners and passengers confident in the Dreamliner.
