Date: August 5, 2025
Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand
Disaster Type: Cloudburst and Landslide
Casualties (So Far): 7 Dead, 20+ Missing
The peaceful hill town of Uttarkashi, often known as the gateway to the sacred Yamunotri Dham, was rocked by a devastating cloudburst followed by a massive landslide on the night of August 4, 2025. The incident occurred near Mando village, just a few kilometers from the district headquarters, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Locals reported that raging waters from the hills swept through homes as residents were sleeping. Within minutes, houses were flattened, roads were washed away, and several people were reported missing.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration immediately launched rescue operations. Helicopters were deployed early morning to airlift critically injured individuals and deliver food and medical supplies to stranded villagers.
The administration has confirmed that at least 7 bodies have been recovered, while 20 people are still unaccounted for, and efforts are ongoing to find survivors.
Rescue teams are battling against time and weather. Continuous rainfall has made the terrain slippery and dangerous, increasing the risk of more landslides.
Mando village: Epicenter of the cloudburst
Gangotri Highway: Blocked at several points due to landslide debris
Uttarkashi town: Power cuts, disrupted mobile network
Nearby hamlets: Many houses destroyed or buried under debris
The Uttarakhand government has issued a red alert in hilly areas and urged tourists to postpone their travel plans to Gangotri and Yamunotri until the situation stabilizes. Char Dham Yatra movement from Uttarkashi has also been temporarily halted.
Pilgrims stranded at several locations have been moved to temporary shelters and safe zones.
One resident said,
“We were sleeping and suddenly heard a roar, like a train crashing. In minutes, the water came into our homes. We ran with nothing but our lives.”
Another villager added,
“We lost everything—our cattle, food, our documents. The government must help us rebuild.”
Experts say that such cloudbursts are becoming more frequent in Uttarakhand due to global warming. Sudden weather shifts and intense rainfall in short durations are symptoms of climate change, especially dangerous in fragile ecosystems like the Himalayas.
Environmentalists are also raising questions on over-construction, deforestation, and poor drainage systems, which have worsened the impact of natural disasters.
₹4 lakh compensation announced for the families of the deceased
CM Pushkar Singh Dhami personally monitoring the situation
Medical camps and relief packages being set up
24×7 control room established for updates and emergency assistance
The tragedy in Uttarkashi is a grim reminder of how vulnerable our hilly regions are to the fury of nature. While rescue teams are working day and night to bring life back to normal, long-term planning, sustainable development, and environmental conservation are the need of the hour.
Let’s hope Uttarkashi heals soon and no more lives are lost in this battle against the elements. 🌲💧
